  • "We had a little library there, the writings of Marxism-Leninism. And there was a little book among them, and it consisted entirely of contributions of a single spirit. The first chapter was called The Light Bulb, and it said, 'All the people in the whole world think that the light bulb was invented by Thomas Alva Edison in America. But it is not so! Fifty years before, a Russian man, Ivan Ivanovič, had also invented the light bulb, but only the stuffy Tsarist regime prevented him from perfecting the invention. And this is how important inventions were discussed. At the time, we laughed until we were clutching our stomachs. From the point of view of current events in Russia, I don't find it so funny. It captures the spirit of Russia exactly - 'we are the best and everyone else is scum'."

  • "A representative of the Communist Party committee spoke there. And he began by saying that he still felt that this meeting was not allowed. What was nice and kind was that instead of shouting, booing and whistling, the whole square turned its back on him and he was there for ten minutes talking to the backs of the people and everybody was doing like nothing. Then he was replaced by another speaker and the whole square turned back to City Hall and listened to the speaker again. That was so nice and sweet of the revolution."
