  • “I do not get tired, because what I desire and fight for is to see free and democratic Cuba, that is my dream, and I will do my best to see it come true. I can already see this change on our island knocking on the door. I simply exhort all the people of Cuba, and specially the Cuban youth, not to be afraid of any repression, to take the streets to request democracy. Young generation of the Cubans represents the true driving force behind this change in our country. ‘Do you think the country will change?’ The country will change if the people decide to change it. If the Cuban people join the mass political organization that exists in the country, there may be a totally radical change shortly. Because united nation, defending their rights, there is no dictatorship that can endure.”

  • “There are a lot of people who are quite demonstrating in favor of us the opponents. They also suffer beatings, too. Because there have been cases when they demonstrate, they are called abusers, the State Security officials come and beat them, beat them with their batons, push them, threatening to expel them from their work. They seek all kinds of threats to have the people silent and threatened, covered in fear.”

  • “The economic situation in Cuba is terrible. And people have no other choice but to drop out of school, because they cannot afford to buy a pair of shoes at a regular store, like the ones we have now opened. For that reason, they have once again set up shop where you can pay only with an American dollar. When here in Cuba there exist thousands and thousands of citizens who went to the prison for possession of that currency. And now these stores that exclusively accept American dollars are authorized in Cuba and have privilege over all other stores.”

  • “The national police officers gave me those fines for my activism that I carry out daily in the province of Santiago de Cuba, and every time there is some demonstration, such as during the campaign ‘We All March’ [Todos Marchamos] of ‘Ladies in White’ [Damas de Blanco], when we go out to the streets, when we provide interviews, and when we challenge delegates of the municipality. They summon us, beat us, beat us up and then the police just give us a fine. The general comprehensive inspectors give you a fine, a fine that seems to be some fine for a violation of the rules or normative, a license of sale violation, a violation of some rules, but in the reality, you are not violating anything. Those are fines for being a human rights defender. That is how I got already six fines.”

“Changes in Cuba are already opening the door.”

Roberto Perdomo Fuente is a defender of human rights and an opponent of the communist regime in Cuba. He was born in 1975 in the Julio Antonio Mella municipality, located in the province of Santiago de Cuba. His childhood was rough and difficult due to his mother’s 15 years of incarceration for the supposed arson of a pharmacy; therefore, Roberto and his siblings lived with their father. His family never agreed with the essence of the communist regime; on the contrary, they did not desire to have anything in common with the established system. In 2014 Roberto joined the opposition movement, “Patriotic Union of Cuba” [Unión Patriótica de Cuba], and from that moment on experienced constant persecution, threats, and attacks by the State Security. Roberto is currently the coordinator of another opposition organization, “Eastern Democratic Alliance” [Alianza Democrática Oriental], in Mella and supports the “Ladies in White” [Damas en Blanco] movement and its “We All March” [Todos Marchamos] campaign. For his anti-governmental activities, he has been detained more than 650 times and endured more than 200 attacks by the national police. He also faces threats of imprisonment for unpaid fines amounting to 10,900 Cuban pesos. However, he continues to fight for a free and democratic Cuba, a dream that he wants to see come true.
