George Thompson was born in 1924 in Kansas, United States of America. In 1943, at the age of nineteen, he volunteered for the U.S. Army. After going through basic training and several courses at the United States Army Armor School in Fort Knox, Kentucky, he had been assigned to 16th Armored Division. As its member, he undertook a voyage across the Atlantic in 1944, during which his convoy had been attacked by German submarines, landing safely after twelve days on sea in Le Havre, France. After that, he had been serving as a mechanic in France, providing service for Division´s vehicles. In the mid April of 1945, he entered Germany with his unit, taking part in the siege of Indorf, takeover of Fürth, and after that, the invasion of Czechoslovakia. He took part in the liberation of Nýřany and Plzeň (Pilsen), and had also been active in Lestkov and Mariánské lázně (Marienbad).
