Helena Lišková was born on April 22, 1934 in the village Vranovská, Kysucké Nové Město district. Her father was a worker, her mother a housewife. Together with her sister and her parents she lived for a long time in Bánovce nad Bebravou in the Trenčín region. During the war she experienced how the Germans severely suppressed the partisan movement in the vicinity of Bánovce. The village was liberated by the Romanian army. After finishing primary school and due to the lack of job opportunities in Slovakia, she was sent by the authorities to Bohemia in 1949, where she worked in various agricultural jobs. In 1951 she met her future husband in Slavonice, who found her a job as a saleswoman in Jednota and arranged for her to be trained as a saleswoman. Future husband Liška, born on November 18, 1933 in Dačice, was an electrician. In Slavonice, he joined an illegal group of former scouts who distributed anti-communist leaflets in the town and its surroundings. Based on denunciations, the members of the group were arrested by the State Security in the first half of 1955. Like the others, Liška ended up in solitary confinement in Jihlava, where he was investigated for six months. The trial took place on 17 and 18 November 1955 in Jihlava and sent Liška to prison for eight years for treason and association against the Republic. In addition, he forfeited all his property and lost his civil rights for five years. During his sentence, Liška first worked for three years at the Zdeněk Nejedlý mine in Rtyně, near Krkonoše, and for some time he was also imprisoned in Valdice and then in Leopoldov. In 1959, after many requests from his wife and parents, he was released on parole. After his return from prison he could not find work for a long time, he worked as a digger of excavations, later as a maintenance worker and a warehouse worker in a tractor. He and his wife Helena had two daughters, but despite their excellent grades they could not even get into high school. The family lived in Dačice, where Helena Lišková worked until her retirement as a shop assistant and later as manager of the local Jednota.
