He was born on October 9, 1944, in the German forced labor camp in Schneidemühl (now Piła), as the child of Polish forced laborers who had been sent to work in Germany in 1940. As the child of a forced laborer, he was supposed to be killed at birth; however, the midwife who delivered him did not inject him with poison. After returning from the camp to the farm where his parents worked, he was taken away from his mother and transferred to a Lebensborn center in Bad Polzin (now Połczyn-Zdrój), where he was subjected to pseudomedical experiments. Thanks to the help of a German nurse working at the center, his parents managed to abduct him. In the following days, until the front arrived, his mother hid him in a cellar. Because he was born in a camp and taken to a Lebensborn center, his parents had no documents confirming his identity. Polish authorities doubted his Polish origin and therefore refused to issue him an identity document. Only at the age of 15 did he obtain official papers. Throughout his adult life, he concealed his past, even from his closest family. He gave his first interviews about his story under a pseudonym. Throughout his entire professional life, he worked as a paramedic and hospital orderly.
