J.M. can. Karel Havelka was born on May 20, 1953 to a mixed marriage. His father was Czech, his mother German, he spent his childhood in Šluknov. His mother’s family was displaced in the first wave, she herself was away from home at that time. Later, no one tried to remove her. It was not until 1960 that she was able to visit her parents, who lived just over the border in the GDR, and from then on the Havelka family visited them regularly. However, they had to apply for a visa, for which they waited for months. Karel Havelka studied theology in Litoměřice and was ordained a priest by Cardinal Tomášek in 1985. State Security (StB) tried to get him to cooperate by promising him the possibility of visiting relatives in West Germany, which he refused. Every year, he goes to celebrate mass at a gathering of his relatives in the defunct village of Fukov.
