The following text is not a historical study. It is a retelling of the witness’s life story based on the memories recorded in the interview. The story was processed by external collaborators of the Memory of Nations. In some cases, the short biography draws on documents made available by the Security Forces Archives, State District Archives, National Archives, or other institutions. These are used merely to complement the witness’s testimony. The referenced pages of such files are saved in the Documents section.

Karel Širmer (* 1945)

• narozen v září 1945 ve Střezivojicích, vyrůstal na pražských Vinohradech, otec měl hospodu s obchodem

• po vojně nastoupil k Jednotě Mělník, od roku 1969 pracoval v podniku RaJ Praha 5

• působil jako číšník v dělnických hospodách „U Tatrovky“, „U Šmídů“ a „U mlynářky“

• v roce 1976 přešel do restaurace „Na Klamovce“, kde zůstal jako vedoucí 28 let

• podnik navštěvovali disidenti, hudebníci z Plastic People, signatáři Charty 77, což přitáhlo pozornost StB

• StB prováděla kontroly, perlustrace, nátlak na RaJ, hospoda musela zavírat i v pondělí

• Širmer platil pokuty za údajné přestupky, hosté se na ně skládali

• koncem 80. let byl Na Klamovce zadržen Václav Havel, po zvolení prezidentem tam oslavil vítězství

• po roce 1989 hospodu zprivatizoval, vedl ji až do roku 2004, kdy odešel do penze
