The following text is not a historical study. It is a retelling of the witness’s life story based on the memories recorded in the interview. The story was processed by external collaborators of the Memory of Nations. In some cases, the short biography draws on documents made available by the Security Forces Archives, State District Archives, National Archives, or other institutions. These are used merely to complement the witness’s testimony. The referenced pages of such files are saved in the Documents section.

PhDr. Vladimír Munk (* 1925  †︎ 2023)

Dělal jsem vědu, abych nemyslel na holokaust

  • narozen 27. února 1925 v Pardubicích

  • 9. prosince 1942 byl s rodiči deportován do Terezína

  • v říjnu 1944 transportován do vyhlazovacího tábora v Auschwitz-Birkenau

  • později internován v pobočných táborech v Gleiwitz (Gliwice) a Blechhammer (Sławięcice)

  • v květnu 1945 se vrátil do Pardubic, zrychleně ukončil středoškolská studia

  • vystudoval Vysokou školu chemickotechnologického inženýrství v Praze, poté ještě mikrobiologii a biochemii

  • pracoval v Ústředním výzkumném ústavu potravinářského průmyslu a v Akademii věd

  • roku 1969 emigroval s manželkou a dvěma syny do USA

  • vyučoval až do důchodu na univerzitě v Plattsburghu, kde žil v domě s pečovatelskou službou

  • zemřel 30. září roku 2023
