Silvestra Chnápková was born on 30 April 1954 in České Budějovice (southern Bohemia) to Stanislav and Terezie Lupert. But her parents permanent residence was in Litvínov, northern Bohemia. Her father had been allocated to a chemical plant, and although he published the results of his research in the field of chemistry in scientific journals, he never worked in a position worthy of his education. Silvestra's mother Terezie worked as an office lady. Her family suffered from insufficient funds, and her parents' adversity to the Communist regime formed the witness's opinions from her early childhood. She spent the summer holidays of 1968 with her sister in Slavošovice near Třeboň, and she still has vivid recollections of the invasion on 21 August.
